Gordon Dangerous

Dr Freeman… What had that name been worth?

An MIT education, but most of his degree had been left in the dorms of Black Mesa.

The combine had been a new challenge and the title of Doctor had meant nothing to them.  It only carried clout with the other egg-heads that had survived long enough to work on new technologies for war.

After that last encounter, he was certain that his name would be remembered as the One Free Man.  Doctor Freeman would be dead and gone, but legends of the Free Man would go on.  That was worth something though… wasn’t it?

But when Gordon sat up, he realized that he was not dead… and not in a Combine prison.  He wasn’t even in a ruined building.

In an instant, he realized that he was comfortably sitting in an office chair behind a big desk.  Partially graded papers lay scattered about in unsorted piles.

Concussive bangs on the office door were startling.  It was then that Gordon realized that his students were calling his name from beyond the frosted glass pain.  Room 102, the office of Doctor Gordon Freeman.  Archeology.

Office hours… oh #$%&!  He’d forgotten to keep his office hours again.  He must have slept through.  The anxious students outside would tear him apart.  He’d spend all night answering questions and checking papers.

That did not sound like a good idea.

Gordon rushed to the window and opened it.  But the narrow slit of an opening was far too small.  Then, quite by accident, he stumped his toe on the vent cover in the floor.  Of course.  He worked quickly, prying open the cover and dropping down inside.

As he scurried about the many dark passages, he longed for the HEV suit from his dreams… for that blasted flash-light.

Passing one vent cover, he noticed the students above, rustling and calling his name… still oblivious to his escape.  Moments later, he emerged from an opening near the ceiling of the basement.  Dropping out, he scurried out a side entrance and began walking casually to his car.

In a flash, the black car had screeched to a stop before him.  A second skidded to a halt behind him.  Men in gray business suits and proper hats clamored out and circled like over-sized, over-dressed vultures.

“Doctor Freeman,” one of them said quietly as he stepped forward.  “We need you to come with us please.  There’s someone who’d like to speak with you.”
